La Jolla Beaches

La Jolla beaches are some of the most picturesque beaches of any beaches in all of San Diego. The rocky coast that calls most of the La Jolla shoreline home is unique tho this part of the county and offers visitors plenty of small, cresent beaches to call home.

Beach access here can sometimes be an issue here, especially in the summer when crowds of locals flock to the coast. This is especially true in the southern part of La Jolla, where million-dollar homes hung the coast. For the best chance to find a piece some sand her in La Jolla your best bets are to keep in the downtown area, La Jolla shores and perhaps Marine street and Windansea if you arrive early.

The best beaches in La Jolla

  • Windansea beach

Identifiable by the palm roofed surf shack perched above the surf, Windansea beach is as local a beach as you can get. The beach is small and the surf big, which makes this beach one for limited sunbathing. If your into watching world-class surfers this is your beach. Windansea is the birthplace of surfing in San Diego, so a pilgrimage is a must.
  • Marine street

Located a bit north of Windansea is Marine street. This popular body surfing and surfing beach offers very limited residential parking, no services and only a couple of liquor stores a few blocks away. Pack up the cooler and what you will find here is a great beach that is semi-secluded, generally quiet and great for people watching. The water is warm, but can be very dangerous during a south swell. Severe spinal damage can, and has occured to those not accustomed to this type of surf, so caution is advised to all.
  • La Jolla Children's pool

Over the past couple of years the Children's pool, once a favorite bathing spot for kids and their families has been taken over by some friendly sea lions. The federal government has protected these animals and it has now blocked access to the pool for the general public. If you want ot come by and check out the wildlife you are more than welcome, but it is a felony to harass or otherwise disturb these mammals. Beach options - If you had your heart set on this beach and are looking for alternatives just walk a bit south. The Ellen Browning Scripps park and the coastline to the south offers a great alternatine. The other option os to head for La Jolla shores.
  • La Jolla shores

La Jolla shores is the crown jewel of beaches here in La Jolla. With a large parking lot, serveces, showers and restrooms, La Jolla shores is by far the best family beach in La Jolla. The beach itsself stretches for a couple of miles north to Torrey Pines state beach and then on to Del Mar and is great for long walks or beach runs. The shores offers families (and kids) a safe harbor to explore the gentle Pacific. The surf here, most of the time is gentle and with the lack of slope to the ocean bottom means that the kids can playat the waters edge in relative safety, the only things to worry about is the crowds on busy summer days.
  • Black's beach

With either a 1000 ft hike down some unstable cliffs or a mile or so walk up from La Jolla shores, one can say that Black's is one of the most secluded beaches in San Diego. The city's only "clothing optional" beach is not easy to get to, but well owrth he effort for those looking to shead their clothes. The other great reason to come to this beach is there is some pretty good surf fishing here. The San Diego La Jolla ecological reserve underwater park lies just offshore, and does both Scripps and La Jolla canyons which are home to alot of sealife. Surfing, diving, hang gliding and parasailing are other activities that can be enjoyed here.
